Why Should We Mulch The Base Of Trees And Shrubs?
Why should we mulch?
Mulching is when you add organic or sometimes non organic material to the base of trees and shrubs. Organic materials such as wood-chip, pine needles, hard wood bark, soft wood bark and compost mixes have many benefits such as improving soil quality, retaining moisture and controls weed growth etc.
After saying that mulching needs to be done correctly. It should be layed no more than 2 to 4 inches deep and should not be piled against the trunk this would be called volcano mulching. So try and think of it as a doughnut not a volcano and where possible try to spread the mulch to the drip line of the tree.
So really if done correctly there is every reason to mulch the base of your trees and shrubs so get mulching .
